About the role
An experienced Biomedical Scientist is needed to join a busy laboratory in Gibraltar on an initial six‑month fixed‑term contract. The role covers Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Coagulation and is highly hands‑on and autonomous, allowing the scientist to authorise results, resolve serological discrepancies and make complex transfusion decisions while contributing to the service’s quality systems.
Key responsibilities
- Perform analytical testing across Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Coagulation.
- Validate and authorise patient results in line with laboratory policies.
- Carry out blood grouping, antibody screening, cross‑matching and issue blood components.
- Investigate abnormal results and liaise with clinicians as required.
- Authorise complex transfusion decisions, investigate transfusion reactions and resolve serological discrepancies.
- Validate donor serology results and ensure safe release of blood components.
- Monitor blood component inventory and stock levels daily.
- Perform analyser calibration, troubleshooting and advanced quality‑control procedures.
- Participate in internal and external quality‑assurance programmes.
- Maintain compliance with quality management systems, haemovigilance and accreditation standards.
- Develop, review and implement Standard Operating Procedures.
- Maintain accurate documentation and adhere to health and safety regulations.
Required profile
- HCPC‑registered Biomedical Scientist.
- Previous experience in haematology, including blood‑film morphology.
- Experience in coagulation testing.
- Recent experience working in blood transfusion.
- Strong understanding of quality‑management systems and accreditation standards.
- Ability to work autonomously and authorise results independently.
Required skills
- Experience with Sysmex XN1000 analyser.
- Experience with Sysmex XN2000 analyser.
- Proficiency in developing and reviewing Standard Operating Procedures.

- Salary of £31,897 to £37,845 per annum, depending on experience.
