Chief Technology Officer

About the role

GiveDirectly is scaling its cash‑transfer platform to a $5B+ annual operation and needs a senior technology leader to design, build and modernise the systems that move billions of dollars securely to vulnerable populations. The CTO will shape the technical vision, lead a growing engineering team and partner with product, finance and risk leaders.

Key responsibilities

• Define the technology vision, target stack and architecture for a high‑volume cash delivery platform.
• Manage six parallel workstreams, including building a new delivery stack, stabilising legacy systems, donor‑facing products and global emergency cash solutions.
• Recruit, grow and organise an engineering organisation from ~15 to ~30 staff while maintaining high talent density.
• Guide decisions on integrations, data security, reliability and technical debt to support rapid scale.

Required profile

• Proven track record hiring, developing and retaining senior engineers and engineering leaders.
• Strong business judgment, able to make decisive trade‑offs under ambiguity and communicate technical constraints to non‑technical stakeholders.
• Low‑ego, hands‑on problem‑solver who can dive into complex issues when needed.
